On the morning of April 6, 2023, the International Education College of Shanghai Business School heldaroutine meeting on international student education. Online or offline, Vice President He Ying, college deans in charge of international student education, international student class teachers/counselors of each college and relevant personnel of the International Education College attended the meeting presided over by Vice Executive Dean Chen Wei.
Firstly, Vice Dean Dai Ying of International Education College reported on the recent work related to international students from the aspects of teaching, educational administration, student management, enrollment and international exchange. The work included the initiation ofmajor switchesforthe Grade-2022 international students, the formulation of documents (such as the thesis format specification for international undergraduate students), the organization of 3 online/offline activities for international students, and the progressachievedin signing MOUs with the Russian Presidential Academy and the University of the Balearic Islands in Spain,etc. After that, Vice Dean Dai Ying made some important tips for the work deployment in the next phase. In terms of student management, counselors/class teachers of each college should increase the frequency of class meetings, enhance publicity and guidance, value ideological education, and pay attention to students’ physical and mental conditions; in terms of teaching management, the colleges should pay attention to students’ feedback under the blended teaching mode, strengthen the teacher-student interaction, and take into accountofboth online and offline students; in terms of student admission, the enrollment of foreign students (undergraduate and master programs) and summer international programs in 2023 havebeen initiated in an orderly manner,whichrequiresthe active cooperation of the colleges in related work.
The college deans in charge of international student education proposed relevant opinions and suggestions in terms ofmajor switches, blended teaching mode and thesis guidance. After sufficient discussion and communication, Vice Executive Dean Chen Wei made a brief summary as follows. Firstly, improve the student education system, strengthen student management and services, enrich various activities, and advance Chinese and foreign cultural exchanges; secondly, stabilize the teaching order, upgrade the quality of classroom teaching, improve the teaching standard for international students, organize activities such as demonstration open class/young teachers’ exchange, and enlarge and strengthen the all-English model curriculum system; thirdly, increase the enrollment publicity through multiple channels and platforms, so as to achieve the parallel progresses in both quantity and quality of international students; fourthly, strengthen the regulation of international student education, establish practice bases for international students, create innovation and entrepreneurship courses for international students, and build a high-quality entrepreneurship and employment cultivation system.
Finally, Vice President He Ying made a brief conclusion. Facing the severe challenges of “Combined online and offline teaching mode,with students both inside and outside of China”, Vice President He gave full affirmation to the smooth and orderly development of the new semester and put forward the two core points of “stable teaching work and smooth student work”. In terms of teaching, the teaching supervisors should form written reports and establish a follow-up feedback mechanism; the International Education College should cooperate with all colleges to organize teaching salons and teaching workshops on a regular basis to improve the teaching level; in terms of student management, all colleges can adopt a linkage mechanism to communicate with and give feedback to the International Education College in meetings timely; for domestic accommodation management, class teachers are required to conduct regular inspections. She suggested that we should pay attention to the graduation of students, and all colleges should make enough teacher reserves in advance and coordinate all SBS teaching resources in thesis supervision; establish the innovation and entrepreneurship practice base for international students to effectively solve the two difficulties in social practice and graduation internship.
The meeting sorted out and clarified the main points in the recent management work related to international students and the emphases and difficulties to be overcome in future work. In order to actively respond to the new requirements and challenges under the new situation and to benchmark the requirements for education internationalization, the International Education College will continue to strengthen the regulation and system for international student education, making the achievements of SBS international students the new “name card” of SBS.
