On the afternoon of November 2, 2023, the Collegeof International Education of Shanghai BusinessSchoolheld a regular meeting on international students’ education inConferenceRoom 703of theAdministrativeBuildingin Fengxian Campus.Deans in charge of international student affairs from each secondary college,classsupervisors/counselorsfor international studentsand relevantstaff from the International Education Collegeattended the meeting. Chen Wei, theExecutiveViceDean of the College of International Education,presidedoverthemeeting.
First of all,Dai Ying,theExecutive Vice Deanof the College of International Education, made a report on the recent work of international students from several aspects, such as teaching and academic affairs, student management, enrollment. The specific activities are as follows: completing the make-up examination of Chinese language courses, implementing elective and retaken courses in the new semester, applying for2024 school-leveldemonstrativeEnglish-teaching courses,giving lectures on admission and safety education forfreshmen,organizingtheSport Games, One-Day tour in Shanghai and Chinese Salon Activities.
Ms. Daithenparticularlyprovided some tips for the next stage of work. In terms of student management,it is important to enhance attendance management and be mindful ofstudents’psychological well-being.As for teaching management, much attention needs to be paid to the creditcompletionof senior students and effectively call on them to take internships and finish graduation theses.
Deans in charge of international student affairsin secondary colleges put forward relevant opinions and suggestions from the aspects of theframeworkofthesis, allocation of thesisinstructors, duties forclass supervisors, andarrangement of internship units for international students. Afterathorough discussion,Vice Executive Dean Chen Weimade a brief summary: firstly, it is recommended to unify theframeworkofthesis. Secondly,the progress of the capstone presentation and mid-term presentation needs to be arranged accordingly. In addition, it is suggested to coordinate the allocation of thesis instructorsat a school level, or hire highly qualified experts fromother schoolsto assist. As for the challenges of internship arrangement for international students, many solutions are advised, such as establishing internal practice bases and actively contacting external cooperation institutions. Finally, in response to the current issues of low teaching quality and weak discipline among international students, Mr. Chen suggests strengthening ideological education,andorganizing diverse activities for international students to fill their spare time effectively. Besides, in order to further standardize their behavior and ideological education, student education must be strengthened in areas of fraud prevention, safety, enrollment, discipline, andpersonalhealth.
This regular meeting comprehensively reviewed the key points of recent international student management work, and further clarified the focuses and challenges that need to be overcome in future. With the upcoming graduation ofthefirstbatch ofEnglish-teaching international students, the College of International Education and secondary colleges will work together to gather consensus and ensure the implementation of important tasks such astheseand internships. This will lay a solid foundation for international students to fit in society and secure a future job, and help them better adapt to and integrate into the globalized workplace environment.
